How to Check availability storage on an iPhone or an iPad
The storage capacity on your iPhone or iPad will never be enough, so it is advised that you check for the available storage capacity on your iPhone or iPad.
To check the space you have left on either your iPhone or iPad, head to Settings, tap “General” and finally select ''iPhone Storage'' for iPhones or ''iPad Storage'' for iPad.
At the top of your screen, the used space on your iPhone is displayed.
The available space is what’s left once you subtract the used space from the total storage space as in the image above.
How to Free up Storage Space
If you are lacking space on your iPhone or iPad and you have already tried deleting a few videos, photos and apps. There are some other things you could do.
- Enable iCloud Photos
What iCloud Photos does is upload all your photos and videos to iCloud and then delete the old media files you have from your local storage.
NOTE
This will only happen if you are low on storage space and you can download what you uploaded from iCloud whenever you want to.
To enable this, go to Settings, in the “Photos” section, turn “iCloud Photos” on (for phones running iOS 12 and below, this is titled “iCloud Photo Library”). Then, ensure that “Optimize iPhone Storage” is checked (That's what will delete your old files).
When you enable iCloud Photos or iCloud Photo Library (iOS 12 and below) it will deal with the majority of the storage capacity issues you have as long as there’s enough storage capacity on the iCloud Drive.
If your iPhone is running on iOS 12 or above, you’ll find an “Offload Unused Apps” option just underneath the storage space graph in your iPhone/iPad Storage screen.
When you enable this, iOS will automatically delete the older apps using up space on your device. Tap any app to see the storage space breakdown between the app and app data (apps using more space will be shown at the top).
Then tap “Offload App” to offload only the app you tapped on (the app data will not be affected). If you tap “Delete App” on the other hand, both the app and app data will be removed.
At times app data take more space than the app itself. If that’s the case, open the app and delete the downloaded data to free some space.
If your Music app is at the top of the list in the Storage section, look at the Optimize Storage feature for iCloud Music Library, this reduces offline downloads from Apple Music down a few gigabytes.
If you want this set up, open Settings and go to the “Music” . Make sure “iCloud Music Library” is enabled and scroll down till you see “Optimize Storage” then tap it and toggle the feature from the next page.
In the Minimum Storage segment, choose the amount of music you want on your iPhone or iPad all the time. Selecting “None” will make Apple delete all your music if you’re low on space and other operations need it. You could choose either the 4, 8, 16, 32 GB option.
Check your storage space once every month to see if you’re low on storage capacity and if that’s the case, you can do any of the above.
